Access to the magazine

The Adventure Beyond is a privately run journal. I want its content to be accessible to as many people as possible and use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, to guide further improvements. These voluntary notes do not confirm full conformance.

Scope and method of the review

On 10 and 11 October 2026, a sample of 19 public pages and interface states was examined: the homepage in German, English and Dutch; the magazine and topic filters; Outdoor Cooking; selected recipes, weather reports and gear reviews; searches with and without results; About me; legal information; the error page; and public login and password forms. The review combined axe-core 4.14.0 with manual keyboard operation and checks of structure, contrast and labelling. Text enlargement to 200 per cent and altered text spacing were tested in a local copy. Narrow layouts at 320 CSS pixels were also checked there; selected live pages were additionally used in portrait and landscape orientations. Automated results alone cannot establish full accessibility.

Supported controls and improvements

The website provides a skip link to the main content, visible keyboard focus indicators and labelled controls. The mobile menu can be closed with Escape, returning focus to its trigger. Automatic image changes can be paused. The navigation can wrap when text is enlarged. Contrast in several text areas and labels for the language selector and film cards have been improved. The cookie dialog has a visible close button, can be closed with Escape and returns focus to its trigger. The map is displayed automatically through this website’s server, including on mobile. Four directional buttons allow it to be moved without dragging; these buttons and the zoom controls can be operated with a keyboard.

The four historical radar animations are accompanied by expandable text information and tables containing 24 hourly totals. The tables use the same DWD data as the animations, distinguish missing data from dry weather and can be scrolled horizontally with a keyboard.

Known limitations and outstanding checks

The radar tables summarise local readings and map areas; they do not fully describe the finer spatial details of the animations. Some technical drawings contain labels within the image. Detailed text descriptions are not yet available for every image detail. The accessibility of embedded and linked YouTube videos, particularly subtitles and audio descriptions, has not yet been fully checked.

Tests with VoiceOver and NVDA, on physical mobile devices and with actual browser zoom at 400 per cent are still outstanding. Examining the accessibility tree does not replace a screen reader test. The sample does not cover all content, downloads or signed-in workflows. Full accessibility or legal compliance is therefore not claimed.
