Lost Places
01 / A melody from
the past
In the middle of a seemingly ordinary neighbourhood, hidden behind an overgrown garden, stands the pianist’s house — a place where time seems to have stood still. The approach leads through tall grass, overgrown shrubs and gnarled trees that surround the building like a protective wall. As I enter, an almost tangible silence envelops me, broken only by the creak of floorboards beneath my feet. The hallway is gloomy; dust dances in shafts of light falling through broken windows. The smell of old wood, stale air and damp plaster hangs heavy in the air.
An old grand piano stands in the living room, its black and white keys marked by time. The once polished wood has dulled, covered in a thick layer of dust, as though no one has played it for decades. Right beside it is a laid table — yellowed plates, cups with faded patterns, a toppled sugar dispenser. It looks as if someone abandoned everyday life in mid-stride long ago. Deep cracks run through the walls; wallpaper peels away in long strips. I venture a look into the adjoining rooms.

The wardrobes stand open, clothes hanging neatly from their hangers as if simply waiting to be worn again. The house tells a story — of life that once filled these rooms, of people who laughed, ate and made music. Yet every trace of them is gone. Only their belongings remain, silent witnesses to a bygone age.
Old preserving jars of fruit and vegetables are stacked in the cellar, their labels faded and their contents long past being edible. In the attic I find yellowed newspapers, some dating from a time that has long since become history. Wind whistles through the gaps, stirring up dust and carrying the musty smell of past decades through the rooms. I cannot stop wondering who once lived here. Was the pianist a gifted artist? Were lively parties held here? Or did everything end suddenly, perhaps overnight?
This house is more than an abandoned place — it is a time capsule full of secrets, a window into a past that was never entirely forgotten. As I carefully make my way back, I sense the faint trace of a melody long since silenced, still seeming to hang in the air. An echo of a time that appears frozen here forever.
02 / FIELD NOTE
When silence speaks — thoughts on the pianist’s house
This house is more than an abandoned place — it is a frozen snapshot of a bygone era. Every room tells a story, every detail left behind raises questions. The laid table, the old piano, the full wardrobes — they all leave me wondering who lived here and why everything ended so suddenly. The silence is almost tangible, yet every creaking floorboard and dusty object seems to hold an echo of the past. It feels as if time has stopped here, as if the past still quietly reverberates within the walls. Despite its decay, this place retains a strange dignity — as though it is waiting for someone to tell its story.
03 / Forgotten homes
Time capsules of everyday life
Abandoned homes are often silent witnesses to lives once lived. Many were given up for economic or family reasons; some were left in a hurry. Furniture, personal belongings and sometimes even food remain, as if time has frozen. Some of these houses are protected heritage buildings; others slowly crumble. In so-called ghost villages, entire streets are uninhabited. Anyone entering such places feels their unique atmosphere, caught between decay and memory.
