Between sand, tides & freedom.
A summer on Rømø, where roads end in the sea, the Jeep becomes basecamp and wind, weather and family time turn into a real off-road story.
Rømø is not an island you simply visit. You drive out until the horizon grows bigger than any plan.
This Danish North Sea island is one of the few places in Europe where the beach itself becomes part of the road trip. In the Wrangler, the adventure starts long before you reach your destination: the access road opens directly onto the sand, the tracks disappear in the wind, and suddenly there is nothing but space between the vehicle and the sea.

Wide-open space instead of signposts.
Even the approach has its own rhythm. Shift into Drive, look ahead — and firm sand carries the Jeep far out onto the open beach. While other vehicles can quickly dig themselves in, the Wrangler stays composed, putting distance between us and everyday life.
Lakolk is at its best in the morning: few people, just waves, gulls and a line on the horizon. Yet every metre remains a natural habitat. Speed, distance from people and wildlife, and the current tides determine the route.

When calm turns to action.
In the south, the beach becomes even wider and finding your bearings more demanding. Here, you can drive the Jeep far out — to where peace and freedom seem almost boundless and children find their own terrain in the sand.
But being close to the sea demands attention. When the water rose faster than expected, our break turned into a focused journey back. Four-wheel drive, ground clearance and a clear view of the safe line made the difference. Afterwards, there was salt on the paintwork, sand on the running boards and a story that would outlast any car wash.

03 · Basecamp on edge
Seven hours of thunderstorms.
From 11 pm until the early morning, wave after wave of thunderstorms passed over the campsite. Lightning tore through the sky, thunder rolled across the island and rain turned paths and pitches into small lakes.
Inside our dry basecamp, bad weather became an intense encounter with nature. Outside, the front was at work; inside, there was time to listen — and to experience how quickly a peaceful holiday island can turn into a rugged North Sea setting.
More than scenery. A journey together.
Between kite flying, whittling, swimming and long days on the beach lay the real adventure: time for each other. When the caravan was hitched to the Jeep again and the island grew smaller in the rear-view mirror, we were left with salt, sand and the certainty that Rømø had become more than a destination.

At Lakolk beach, the drive itself becomes part of the experience: firm sand carries vehicles far out onto the open beach. Between the dunes and the North Sea, there is plenty of room for a long beach day, clear photographic perspectives and the light just before sunset.

Sønderstrand
In the southwest, Sønderstrand opens out into one of Europe’s widest beach landscapes. The enormous area provides striking Jeep and outdoor scenes; designated zones are also set aside here for land sailing, kite buggies and blokarts.

Rømø Familie Camping
This quiet, child-friendly campsite lies in the north of the island amid protected nature. Two play areas, cabins, pitches and easy access to heathland and the North Sea beach make it a practical base for families and Jeep tours.

Below the surface with a net
Naturcenter Tønnisgård organises guided shrimp-fishing outings for families at Lakolk beach. Children and adults use nets in the shallow water to search for shrimp, crabs, small fish, jellyfish, starfish and other marine life. The catch is gathered in tanks, examined together and explained in accessible language before any bycatch is gently returned to the water. The largest shrimp are then freshly prepared and tasted right on the beach.
The activity lasts around two hours, is suitable for children aged three and over, and uses nets of different sizes. According to the organiser, 2026 prices start at DKK 100 for children and DKK 175 for adults. Always check dates, language, meeting point and current prices in your booking confirmation — some tours do not start at the nature centre itself.

An island of sand and wind
Rømø lies in the Danish Wadden Sea and is connected to the mainland by the toll-free Rømø causeway. Wide beaches, dunes, heathland and constantly changing light define the island. Local markings, tides and nature conservation rules always take priority.
With Jeep and caravan
Getting there from Germany is straightforward. Campsites, cabins and holiday homes are spread across the island. Booking early is worthwhile in high season; for beach days, keep weatherproof clothing, water and food in the vehicle.
A day with the Vikings
For a change from the beach, Ribe offers cobbled streets, a cathedral and a historic old town. Museet Ribes Vikinger tells the story of the town’s early history, while Ribe VikingeCenter brings crafts, farmsteads and daily life to life in an open-air setting.
The outdoors is the programme
Shrimp fishing, the nature centre, beach walks, kites and North Sea waves need no staged backdrop. Check activities and meeting points in advance — guided tours in particular do not always start at the organiser’s premises.
