The folding FENNEK hobo stove takes up little space in my luggage. I use it for small meals or a coffee on the road. I need dry wood and a suitable place where cooking over a fire is allowed.

What I like about the FENNEK Hobo

Taken apart, the stove packs flat. It feels sturdy to me, and I find the support useful for a mug, small pot or small frying pan.

For bigger cookware, I'd check that it stands securely first. A large pot doesn't automatically fit a small stove.

02 / FIELD NOTE

Cooking with wood instead of gas

The hobo stove runs on a small wood fire. I don't need a gas cartridge, but I do need dry fuel. While cooking, I have to keep adding wood and watching the fire.

For a quick coffee break, this takes more preparation than a gas stove. Afterwards, the stove needs to cool and the ashes must be disposed of safely. When I have time, I enjoy cooking over the little fire.

Strengths and limits

  • Strengths: Packs flat, works for small meals and needs no gas cartridge.
  • Limitations: Limited pot support, dependence on dry fuel and extra work tending the fire, dealing with ash and cooling down.
  • Before the trip: Check the exact model, suitable cookware and local fire rules.

Where I use the wood stove

I use the stove only where it's allowed and conditions are suitable for a fire. I follow the manufacturer's instructions. In dry conditions, or if I'm unsure, I leave it unlit.

My verdict on the FENNEK Hobo

I like the FENNEK for coffee and small meals. It packs small but needs more attention while cooking. When I'm in a hurry, I'd choose a gas stove.
